In this paper, I establish a method for measuring how neccesary commodities are to the economy. This measurement is a function of the correlation between the consumption of a given commodity and economic indicators. If consumption is highly and positively correlated with indicators of overall economic health, then that commodity is more of a luxury. I provide luxury scores for all commodities with consumption data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis from 1980-2017. Determining how essential commodities are is a key part of studies of interdependence in international relations. This also holds massive policy implications in determining the existence or strength of dependence or chokepoints a given nation may be subject to.
